Religious Exemptions for Immunization Non-Compliance At An All Time High in Tennessee

Parents citing religious reasons for non-compliance with child immunization requirements has reached an all-time high in Tennessee.

With school starting back this week, among all of the other compliance issues educators have to deal with, one that has been steadily growing in non-compliance is immunization. The Tennessee Department of Health publishes annual surveys on both the immunization status of 24-month olds and kindergarteners. Though both surveys find that the majority of Tennessee’s kindergarteners and 24-month-olds are up to date with their immunizations the 2024 survey found that the number of students who lack complete immunization records has reached an all time high of 7.2 percent. Nearly half of those parents cite religious reasons for non-compliance. Religious exemptions has steadily increased in both public and private schools to an all time high of 3.4 percent.
